Instagram Launches In-App Checkout

Instagram has launched “Checkout on Instagram” for a limited number of beta testers before rolling out to users in the US.

While Facebook looks to unify Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger, the introduction of In-App purchasing was always expected in a bid for Facebook to increase its share in the e-commerce market.

Launching with some of Instagram’s biggest brand names, including Adidas, Nike, Prada, Burberry, H&M, MAC Cosmetics, Zara and Uniqlo, users will begin to see a “Checkout on Instagram” button. This is similar to how users can view Facebook Shopping items by tapping on an image.

Speaking to Mobile Marketer, Jet Atkin, founder of hair care brand Ouai, said; “So many customers find us on Instagram and refer back to our profile to learn about our products […] Checkout removes any friction so experiencing and exploring can carry on uninterrupted.”

In September 2018, it was reported that Instagram was working on their own shopping app. It is unclear if this was the result of the rumours.
